Hacienda: To Die For

The Original Ad

Maybe Hacienda’s billboard in 2011 did not have the best strategy by alluding to the mass cult suicide of Jonestown in 1978.

By keeping the bold and patterned spirit of Mexican restaurants, I redesigned and hand-crafted each ad to feature skeletons enjoying Mexican food with the playful message that Hacienda’s food is to die for.

My Process

Beginning with composition and hand type sketches. Then, refining the style in Illustrator and printing the skeletons and food using the Cricut Explore Air 2 on cardstock paper.

Designs are assembled with sequin patterns, then photographed and edited in Photoshop. Hand type is digitized and now working with color combinations.

Three cohesive and playful pieces came to life (or the dead!) Ready for printing application.

Hand drawn typography to fit the style of a Mexican restaurant and bone look of the skeleton.
